The First Update

As many of you know Dad was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 2007. For the most part since that time, there has been very little progression. We learned on September 20, 2018, that Dad’s pulmonary fibrosis, instead of lying dormant has now become very active. As many of you know pulmonary fibrosis destroys lung tissue gradually. There is no cure. With the acceleration of the condition, we know his time is limited and could be very short.

Mom & Dad continue to live at Aldersgate Retirement Community in Charlotte, where they have lived since December, 2011. Your ongoing prayers and concerns are coveted and we appreciate your continued support. We will continue to provide updates on this website as they occur. Please feel free to also leave comments or memories if you are moved to do so.

  2. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this time. Tom has always been of my heroes in ministry. I will always be grateful to him as one of those mentors who always had time for us younger guys coming along. His friendship and guidance were, and have remained, an inspiration to me. I always wanted to try to be to others what he was to me. Good bless you.

  3. I am so sorry to learn of Tom’s condition. I miss seeing both your parents at church. I got to know Tom very well when he was part of the UMC conference team years ago. He gave good insight to our committee and was always encouraging. Love, prayers, and blessings to all.

    1. Tom has been a long time friend, pastor & mentor who helped me to believe in myself toward the path of ordained ministry. He has literally “fought the good fight” in doing everything he can to combat this terrible disease. I pray for peace, for physical comfort & his knowledge that he is loved by so many.

  11. Our thoughs and prayers are there with Tom and all of his family. He is such a wonderful and caring man and has made a world of difference in my daughter, Mary Clare Turner’s and our lives. He was greatly responsible for getting her in a UMAR group home where she happily lived until she died in 2010. We shall be forever grateful for all he did to help us get her into that wonderful facility.
    Take care and know
    that we all love you,
    Clare and John Turner

  12. Tom and LaVon, you and your family are in my prayers. The memories flood through my mind as I go back to my days as a young girl at WCUMC. You are special in so many ways. I often think of that strawberry cake Mom made for you, and the garden vegetables Daddy left on your doorstep. You’re an inspiration to our family; we are so grateful. Take care; sending love and hugs.

  13. Dearest Tom and LaVon….. so many memories. My memories are filled with both of you at my side. There are many joyful memories, but you were there for the hardest ones too. Your words of comfort and your compassion, when my sweet little brother died and my father, made those days bearable. Dad loved you both with his whole heart. And you were always mothers hero.
I love that you married Paul and I. You knew me as a child and finally as a grown person. (It did take me a little longer than most!) We continue to enjoy a wonderful marriage.
I remember sharing with you, “If you don’t feel close to God….. who moved.”
It still makes me smile, and I love that you remembered after so so many years.
You will always be in my heart and in my prayers. I love you Tom and LaVon. 💕
